“Deadliest catch”? Not even in the top three

Salon.com ran a story Friday titled “’Deadliest catch’? Not even in the top three”, in which they compared the death rates for the Bearing Sea crab fishery in which the Discovery Channel television show takes place with the actual statistics compiled by the National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health. The 3 fisheries with the highest death rate per capita are: (1) East Coast groundfish (cod and flounder); (2) Atlantic scallop; and (3) West Coast Dungeness Crab. The fishery with the highest number of deaths is the Gulf of Mexico shrimp fishery. The Salon.com article is at this link. So think about the people that risk their lives to put fish on your table – and let’s see what we can do to help bring these men and women home to their families.
